Information Governance

What is Information Governance?

Information is a vital asset, both in terms of the clinical management of individual patients and the efficient organisation of services and resources.

The CCG aims to safeguard patient confidentiality and maintain data security whilst empowering staff within the CCG to perform their role using key information governance principles.

Why is Information Governance important?

Information Governance is the way in which the NHS handles all of its information, and in particular, the personal and sensitive information relating to patients and employees. It provides a framework to ensure that personal information is dealt with legally, securely, efficiently and effectively, in order to deliver the best possible care.  It also offers NHS employees a clear structure to deal consistently with the many different rules about how information is handled, including those set out in:

  • The Data Protection Act 1998
  • The Common Law Duty of Confidentiality
  • The Confidentiality NHS Code of Practice
  • The NHS Care Record Guarantee for England
  • The Social Care Record Guarantee for England
  • The Information Security NHS Code of Practice
  • The Records Management NHS Code of Practice
  • The Freedom of Information Act 2000

Subject access requests

Staff, patients and other individuals have the right under the Data Protection Act to access any personal data that is being held about them. They also have the right to request the correction of such data where they are incorrect. This is called a Subject Access Request.

An individual who wishes to exercise his/her right of subject access is asked to formally request this information in writing to the Information Governance Manager.

The CCG will seek to respond to the request for access to personal data within the 40 calendar days (including bank holidays and weekends) of the request.

For additional detail on the information the CCG holds on you please see our Fair Processing Notice.
